"Drive farther out, and you'll find more affordable homes."
That strategy is becoming much less reliable in Metro Atlanta.
According to a recent CBS News Atlanta report citing Redfin housing data, Metro Atlanta could soon become the first major U.S. metropolitan area where homes in the exurbs—the communities beyond the traditional suburbs—cost as much as, or even more than, homes closer to the city.
You can read the original CBS News Atlanta article here:
Exurbs are communities located beyond the suburbs but still connected to the metro area. Many residents commute into Atlanta, while others now work remotely.
Counties such as Dawson County and Jackson County have experienced some of the fastest population growth in the country, helping fuel increased housing demand. At the same time, many buyers continue looking beyond traditional suburban communities in search of larger homes, more land, and newer construction.
Several factors are contributing to this trend.
Today's buyers often prioritize:
Many families are willing to trade a longer commute for these lifestyle benefits.
Working from home has given many buyers greater flexibility.
Instead of choosing a home based primarily on commuting distance, buyers can now prioritize community, schools, outdoor space, and quality of life.
Metro Atlanta continues to attract new residents from across the country.
As demand spreads farther outside the city, areas once considered rural are quickly transforming into thriving suburban communities with shopping, restaurants, schools, and new developments.
Not at all.

The important takeaway is that buyers should no longer assume these communities are automatically the "budget option."
As someone who helps families relocate throughout North Atlanta—including Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Canton, Woodstock, and surrounding communities—I see this trend firsthand.
Every buyer's priorities are different.
Some families value being close to work, schools, and established neighborhoods.
Others are looking for acreage, newer homes, or more space for a growing family.
The best location isn't simply the least expensive—it's the one that best fits your lifestyle, long-term goals, and budget.
That's why it's important to compare communities based on much more than just price.
